Trip Introduction
Do you wish to explore a place where spirituality harmonizes with the remarkable nature? If so, Himalayan Adventure Treks would like to take you on its 16 days long Lhasa Kailash tour, where you will see an exquisite, untouched mountain honored by various cultures and traditions for millennia.
We promise every moment of our Lhasa Kailash tour will serve as your tribute to the profound history, unwavering faith, and the deep religious connection that echoes on its sacred terrain.
On our Lhasa Kailash tour, you will hike the ever-bending trails and absorb the immense mystical ambiance of Tibet. All around you, a stunning panorama will appear, and as you reach the snowy dome of Mount Kailash, your soul will be soothed with its spiritual aura.
Truly, our Lhasa Kailash tour will take you into the deep spirit of Kailash that will encourage you to reflect and examine your soul. Mount Kailash (6638 m) is the highly revered and esteemed untouched peak that lies in the Ngari region of western Tibet.
There are several Hindu scriptures such as Ramayana, Machchepuran, Vishnupuran, and Shivapuran that describe the prominence of Mount Kailash.
Vishnupuran explains Mount Kailash as having four walls, each representing one of the four faces of Lord Shiva. Each face is composed from lapis lazuli, gold, ruby, and crystal.
On the other hand, Tibetans like to call the peak Kang Rimpoche, while Jains hold the peak as Mount Ashtapada, where their founder Rishabhanatha attained spiritual liberation, and for the followers of Bon Po, it is the holy spirit of Tibet.
The 53 km long outer Kailash circuit route is the hallowed pilgrimage path for Hindus and Buddhists that has been attracting countless travelers for thousands of years.
As per the faith, completing a single circumambulation (Parikrama or Kora) can wipe away the sins of a lifetime, while a 108 Kailash Parikrama can lead to salvation.
Lake Mansarovar (4600 m), on the other hand, flowing calmly beneath the peak is the lake with maternal essence where ritual bathing, puja, and yagya are thought to elevate a pilgrim to the heavens, and drinking its pious waters is said to clean all the bad karma of a hundred lifetimes.
Our Lhasa Kailash tour is meant to take you on this exact 53 km long journey, but with the addition of the exquisite Lhasa tour. This once forbidden land has long been open to visitors, but it has still been able to retain its mysticism and appeal.
Over two days of our Lhasa Kailash tour 16 days journey, you will see the magnificent Potala Palace, Drepung Monastery, Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, and the Barkhor Market, all of which are symbols of Tibet’s old architecture, educational beliefs, history, and legends.
The Kailash Parikrama on our Lhasa with Mount Kailash tour will initiate and culminate in Darchen, guiding you to the enormous 5600 m elevation of the Dolma La Pass.
The pious dates of full moon in May, June, July, and August are often selected for this journey for their offering of the best weather, and their significance of cleansing the bad karma of 100 lives.
Thus, our Lhasa Kailash tour is not only a pilgrimage expedition but also a largely sought-after tourist attraction that will transcend all your physical boundaries and contemplate the infinite beauty of the world around us.

We will then extend our visit to the Pashupatinath vast complex and observe the uniquely bizarre cremation rite at Aryaghat beside the Bagmati River.
Guheshwori Temple (Goddess Sati Temple, the first late consort of Lord Shiva) is also on our touring list, lying in the Pashupati complex.
We will now head back for our final preparation for the pilgrimage trip of our Lhasa Kailash tour 16 days journey. We will be reviewing all the equipment, and you can purchase or rent any gear that you will require in Thamel.

Day 04: Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa.
Very early morning, a very short mountain flight will carry us to Tibet, a beautiful, remarkable Himalayan country with countless 7000 and 8000 m peaks shining and looming in the sky.
At first, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Mount Everest peaks will steal your glance, and later, the vast rugged terrain of Tibet. Gonggar International Airport at Lhasa will welcome us graciously, where we will also meet our Tibetan crew.
After the necessary airport formalities, our crew will drive us toward our accommodation situated in Central Lhasa town, around 60 km farther from the airport.
The sacred white currents of the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo) will lead the way through numerous historical Tibetan ruins. Eventually, rising in the clean Lhasa air, we will see the dazzling features of the Potala Palace up above the high cliff.
No touring actions are planned for today, so once we get into our hotel room, we will focus on rest and sleep. Acclimating to the dry and new air of Lhasa is important before we make its grand tour tomorrow.

Day 05: Full Day Lhasa Sightseeing.
What we have planned for you today on our Lhasa Kailash tour will amaze you and make you understand why Lhasa was once forbidden.
First on our activity planned is the visit to the Tibet icon, Potala Palace, which served as the snug winter home for many Dalai Lamas over the centuries.
The 5th Dalai Lama had this palace built over the 130 m towering red cliff of Marpo Ri overlooking the entire Lhasa city. It has white and red colored two palaces called Potrang Karpo and Potrang Marpi, respectively.
Potrang Karpo was made in 1845, and Potrang Marpi in 1694, and together they have 1000 rooms, making the palace the largest in Lhasa. Inside, the Dalai Lama’s study, private quarters, uncountable Buddhist carvings, statues, 698 paintings on the wall, and ten thousand painted scrolls can be seen.
Next, we have the eternal Jokhang Temple standing tall in Lhasa for over 700 years. The oldest corners of this temple were commissioned by Songtsen Gampo in honor of his wife Bhrikuti, a beautiful Nepali Princess.
Along with several large prayer wheels and rooms, the huge lifelike Shakyamuni Statue will steal our gaze. Outside the temple, we can see the Buddhist pilgrims walking and chanting mantras along the Barkhor Street, which by evening turns into Barkhor Market.
Activity: Sightseeing, 6-7 hours
Max. Altitude: 3,650m/11,975ft. Lhasa
Meal: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel
Day 06: Next day explore Lhasa City.
What we have in store for you today is a visit to Drepung and Sera Monasteries. The Drepung Monastery was erected by the high orders of Chojey Tashi Palden, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, in 1416 and had seen many hard destructive times during the Chinese revolution.
Before, it used to house over ten thousand monks and was at its peak as an influential Buddhist education center. Now, the number has reduced to around 500 monks, but it still stands as one of the great pillars of Tibet.
Once we peek inside what this amazing structure holds, and get the insight knowledge of the monks and their disciples, we will head to see one of the interesting debates at Sera Monastery.
Positioned just beneath the cool shade of the ridge of Phurba Chok Ri in the vast Tatipu massif, the monastery is the residing place of around 3000 monks and disciples.
Sakya Yeshe, one of the followers of Tsong Khapa, initiated its construction. Along with numerous eye-catching and authentic Buddhist relics, the monastery is more popular for the weekday afternoon philosophical and religious debate.
We will now bring a conclusion to our Lhasa excursion and get an early sleep to prepare for the journey ahead.
Activity: Sightseeing, 5-6 hours

Day 07: Drive from Lhasa to Shigatse (271 km).
Our Lhasa Kailash tour will now progress us towards the eagerly anticipated Mount Kailash. From Lhasa, our luxury transport will drive along the southwest road of the very exquisite Friendship Highway.
It will uplift us to an elevation of 4797 m over the Kampala Pass lying between Lhasa and Gyantse. Look at the magical expanse of the Yamdrok Lake, shaped gracefully like a scorpion. This Lake of Tibet is respected as one of the third pious lakes beside Lhamo Latso, Mansarovar, and Nam Tso.
Take a moment to also gaze at the 7191 m tall beautiful Nyenchen Khangsar mountain. The attractive Highway will again elevate us over a 5010 m towering height of Karo La Pass.
A steep downward drive will now be followed towards the fourth major Tibetan city of Gyantse. A pristine Nyang Chu River flows peacefully by it while Pelkor Chode Monastery beautifully dominates its landscape.
We can also see the 32 m tall extraordinary Kumbum Stupa, rich in Nepali crafts, showcasing the beauty of Bodhisattvas. From Gyantse, we will now advance further for around an hour to reach Shigatse.

Day 08: Drive from Shigatse to Saga (460 km).
Leaving Shigatse without seeing the grand Tashilhunpo Monastery will make our Shigatse stay a bit emptier. Early morning, we will drive towards the Tara Peak, aka Drolmari Peak, over which this beautiful Sumeru Monastery is positioned.
From 1447, this revered structure has proposed its duty as home of the Panchen Lamas. Its grand hall has a lifelike statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the 4th Dalai Lama, and Gendun Drup.
It’s now time for us to progress our Lhasa Kailash tour towards Saga. Overcoming the massive heights of two passes of Tso La and Ngamring La (4650 m), the road will continue through Lhatse.
The road will once again climb over the 5220 m towering wall of the Gyatchu La pass, after which our drive will occur beside the placid waters of Pekutso Lake 4330 m) through Sangsang of the Brahmaputra Valley. Soon enough, the happy Tibetan town of Saga will be arrived.
Activity: Drive, 5-6 hours
Max. Altitude: 4,640m/15,223ft. Saga
Meal: Breakfast

Day 09: Drive from Saga to Lake Mansarovar (500 km).
We will have the sacred first view of Mount Kailash today as we touch the ground of the motherly Lake Mansarovar. From Saga, the placid waves of the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo) will detect our path through the solitary town of Old Dzongba.
On the way, we can behold the sight of the very inspiring Dargyeling monastery as we progress toward Paryang. Now, the Horchu River will direct our path and lead to the military checkpoint where our permits will be registered and checked.
Once again, the Tibetan road will ascend over the 5211 m towering height of the Mayumla Pass. The 7694 m towering snowy walls of the Gurla Mandhata/Naimonanyi Peak dominate the picturesque horizon.
Now, the Tibetan road will travel downward for around two hours till we reach the very meditative landscape of Lake Mansarovar. The Kailash rises splendidly in front of our eyes, captivating not only our gaze but also our souls.
Activity: Drive, 6-7 hours
Max. Altitude: 4,600m/15,092ft. Lake Mansarovar
Meal: Breakfast

Day 10: Early morning Puja and Havan at Lake Mansarovar, and drive to Darchen.
Very early in the morning, we will select a place for a bath with the pious water of Lake Mansarovar. Then, we will engage in puja, havan, and yagya according to the tradition and custom.
Take some very harmonious moment by its shore to be with oneself. If you wish, you can also take a bus or jeep (added price to be paid in situ) to circle the lake and undertake your first parikrama on your Lhasa Kailash tour.
Nearby stands the very calming Chiu Gompa, which you can take some moment to explore and bathe in its hot spring (again, an extra fee to be paid in situ).
The 40 km of sandy Tibetan road awaits to carry us onto the starting point of our Lhasa with Mount Kailash tour. It is a destination and trading town for large pilgrim communities from across Tibet and India.
Once we are comfortable in our room in Darchen, our guide will share his knowledge about the upcoming program. He will also tell us about the rental of the yaks, yakmen, porters, and horses.
If you would like to choose any of these services to ease your parikrama, he will make all the advance arrangements (hiring fees to be paid in situ).

Day 11: The First Parikrama begins, drive from Darchen to Tarboche (4724 m) and trek to Dirapuk.
From Darchen, a short 5 km rocky road will lead us to the very altitude of the Yamdwar, which is the Gate of Tarboche for the Tibetans. A multitude of very colorful prayer flags are hung over its pole, which are changed every year at the auspicious date of the Saga Dawa Festival.
The Yamdwar in Hinduism is the gate guarded under the very watchful eyes of God Yama (Deity of Death). As per belief, only the unblemished souls will be allowed to cross its threshold.
After circling the gate, our special Kailash trek will now commence. If you have rented yaks or horses, they will carry your luggage and you from here onward.
Walking upward gradually through the wide open area, we will soon see the ancient Tibetan Sky Cremation Site, where the massive white garment can be seen fluttering above its very ground.
The route will march on towards the Lhachu Valley and keep your eyes peeled on for you may even get a momentary glance of the West Face of Mount Kailash.
Moving along the wild donkeys’ route, we will soon reach the humble ground of Dirapuk Monastery. We can see several new establishments funded by the government for the facilitation of the pilgrims of the Lhasa Kailash tour.
Still, the settings will be quite rudimentary, but we will have all the essentials that we will need for a good night’s sleep. In the meantime, you can behold the magnificent glory of the north smiling face of Mount Kailash.
Activity: Trek, 5-6 hours
Max. Altitude: 4,920m/16,142ft. Dirapuk
Meal: Breakfast

Day 12: Second Parikrama Begins, Trek from Dirapuk to Zutulpuk via Dolma La Pass (5600 m).
Today, we will tackle the most challenging stretch of the Lhasa Kailash tour 16 days journey climbing to the Dolma La Pass (5630m). This strenuous journey contains around 8 km upward ascent, followed by 5 km steep descent, and a comfortable flat 22 km walk to Zutulpuk.
Kindly know that some sections towards the Pass may need you to dismount your yaks or horses, as it can be difficult for both you and the horse to proceed.
At first, the route will elevate gently through some delightful lakes of Jarok Donkhang. Then, we will reach a place just before the Dolma La pass called Shiva Tsal Cemetery (5330 m), where pilgrims traditionally leave something personal: a piece of clothing, a lock of hair, a tooth,
as a symbol of their death and rebirth into a new, more spiritual life.
Progressing without any hurry along the slippery glacial and rocky trail, we will reach the Dolmla La Pass, where countless prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the summit of Mount Kailash is no longer visible.
As per the faith, the nurturing mother Goddess Tara lives here, so the summit is also called the Green Tara Pass. We will now descend along the other side of the Pass and come across Gauri Kunda (5608 m).
The waters of this serene lake are considered very sacred for containing the energy of the divine Goddess Parvati (Lord Shiva’s wife). For the Buddhists, the lake is home to Thukpe Dzingbu and is also referred to as Tso Tuksche.
Following the custom of the Hindus, we may also collect their water to purify our business and office place. We will then cross through the site called the Axe of Karma, where we will sever our ties with the consequences of all our past wrongdoings.
Now, the gentle plains of the valley below will advance us to Zutulpuk Monastery.

Day 13: Third and Last Parikrama, Trek to Darchen, and Drive to Saga.

Lhasa Kailash Tour Best Season
Western Tibet, where the snowy dome of Mount Kailash is located, has quite a different climate from the rest of the world. The scientifically proven oxygen-deprived air of western Tibet somewhat forms a bit of harsh climate, thus limiting the time of the pilgrimage season.
Therefore, for the Lhasa Kailash tour, we suggest you May, June, July, August, September, and the first half of October to be the ideal months. The graceful weather, calming winds, and less snow on the Dolma La Pass, and the green velvety Tibetan plateau will simply make the overall tour mesmerizing.
Religiously also, the full moon days of these months hold significance importance. As per the faith, these are the propitious times for Kailash Parikrama that can wipe away the sins of the last 100 lives.
On the other hand, if the high traffic route is not your thing, you can skip July and August. Winter begins to set in western part of Tibet from late October and lasts until February.
During the season, the area is draped under the thick pile of snow and heavy winds, thus causing the closure of the guesthouses in the region. Therefore, the Lhasa Kailash tour is neither open, accessible, nor suitable during these months.
Lhasa Kailash Tour 16 Days Journey Level of Difficulty
The Lhasa Kailash tour is indeed a demanding expedition that presents several challenges on your way. Among them, the circular path encircling Mount Kailash, lengthening up to 53 km, involves a rigorous trek along the strenuous Tibetan rocky terrain with altitude variations reaching up to 5600 m.
The journey to the Dolma La Pass is very arduous as the icy environment on its route needs careful vigilance, attention and patience. Snow is a constant presence, and you must be prepared to face all seasons within a single day. Most of this segment will require traversing on foot.
Additionally, the sleeping and living facilities in Dirapuk and Zutulpuk can be limited and often lack comfort. Sometimes, in the very high Parikrama season, you may find yourself camping on the monastic grounds.
However, due to government initiatives in recent times, new facilities have been established, though they may not be enough during peak season.
Similarly, the entire journey will be quite long, taking more than 14 days. You can choose to rent yaks, porters, and horses for three days walk, but it is also very vital to maintain a consistent pace.
Thus, the altitude, the extreme changing weather of western Tibet, the remoteness, and the isolation of the area, along with the humble facilities, will require you to have a spirit of adaptability and adventure.
Is the Lhasa with Mount Kailash Tour open for everyone?
Since the Tibet Tourism Bureau has instituted an age limit, as for now, only people between 10 and 70 years old are eligible to join our Lhasa Kailash tour.
Similarly, the citizens from India must be between 18 and 70 years old to be eligible to join the Lhasa with Mount Kailash tour. The Lhasa Kailash tour is already a demanding tour, mainly because of the difficult terrain of western Tibet and high elevation.
Thus, to safeguard the health of young and old individuals, this measure has been in regulation by the government.
The facilitation of hiring the porters, horses, and yaks, the new establishments in Dirapuk and Zutulpuk, a private, spacious, and comfortable 4WD for the entire transportation and support of a capable Nepali and Tibetan team, has, however, enabled anyone within the specified age range to participate in the Lhasa Kailash tour.
However, it is vital to understand that you must be free of any medical issues, particularly related to the lungs, heart, kidneys, and liver. If you do have any of these conditions, you must see your doctor prior to deciding to join our Lhasa Kailash tour 16 days adventure.
How to train and prepare for the Lhasa Kailash Tour 16 Days Trip?
Altitude and terrain-wise, our Lhasa Kailash tour is indeed a demanding expedition that will uplift you from the low plain of Kathmandu to the 5600 m high glacial rocky terrain of Dolma La Pass within a few short days.
Although no long hikes are involved, still, the three-day parikrama will not be like walking in your city park. Therefore, moderate physical training will be essential, particularly for those who are not used to such high elevation and hard terrain.
The right training will include mainly the regular activities that involve walking, biking, cycling, jogging, or hiking on the hills and stair climbing. All these regular actions will help to increase your strength and overall stamina.
Additionally, do not forget to foster your mental resilience, determination, focus, and motivation through deep breathing and meditation.
Risk of Altitude Sickness/Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS and our Planned Acclimatization Program
The quick changes in altitude are the characteristics of our Lhasa Kailash tour, which may result in altitude sickness. Being aware of this risk, we have thus integrated gradual acclimatization tours into our itinerary.
You will spend three touring and preparing days in Kathmandu that will acclimatize you to the Asian air, followed by two days of engaging activities in Lhasa, which will help you adjust to the Tibetan Air.
Additionally, we encourage all our guests to sleep early, increase their water consumption, and rest adequately after their daily moves each day.
All these strategies will, to some extent, help prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) when you will be navigating the towering elevation of Dolma La Pass.
Still, some of you may feel the early physical signs of the AMS, such as headache, drowsiness, nausea, appetite loss, and sleep loss, along with vomiting.
To relieve such physical signs and also to protect oneself from AMS, you can start taking Hongjingtian Tibetan herb or Diamox. Our guide will keep examining your oxygen levels, and if necessary, he may decide to take you down for one or two days.

A splendid three-star hotel on a double-sharing basis has been arranged for your sleep every day in Kathmandu, Lhasa, Shigatse, Saga, and Darchen. Please be kind to explore also our upgrade option for your hotel arrangement.
After Darchen, humble welcoming Tibetan guesthouses will offer you all the essentials needed for a comfortable one-night sleep. In Dirapuk and Zutulpuk, however, you may have to satisfy yourself with dormitory beds arranged in 4 or 5 beds in a single room.
However, our Tibetan team will put their best effort to shelter you in new establishments. Please understand, the sanitary facilities here will have to be shared among the pilgrims, and there may be a lack of hot water.
Regarding meals, the vegetarian menu will be on the table three times daily each day in Kathmandu and Tibet. Till Darchen, you can enjoy the rich menu of Chinese, Tibetan, Indian, Nepali, and Western dishes.
After Darchen, you can rely on instant noodles, rice, tofu, pasta, Tibetan bread, and tea. There will also be small tent tea houses on the outer parikrama route where you can regularly take a break and refill your bottle with tea or hot water.
If camping becomes necessary, our crew will look after the arrangement and setting of the tents.
In terms of your transport, only private, large, and comfortable 4WD vehicles with a personal professional driver and guide will be employed for all types of transportation throughout our Lhasa Kailash tour.
This includes your airport transfers in and out, hotel pickups, Kathmandu tour, visa arrangements, Lhasa tour, and the journey onward to Darchen, with a return through the Kerung border to Nepal.
We will also coordinate and manage your flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. As of now, Himalaya Airlines offers four direct flights to Lhasa every week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, departing every morning at around 8:00 to 8:30 AM.
As for the rental fees for a bus or jeep for the Lake Mansarovar parikrama, along with the costs for horses, yaks, and porters, these will be your responsibility to pay on-site.
Is Solo Travel in Lhasa or Tibet permitted?
Please understand clearly that self-guided travel in Tibet is still not permitted. Independent small walks around the markets and streets of Lhasa without a guide or driver are allowed, but not to the monuments and important tourist sites.
Therefore, you must be an active participant in an organized Lhasa Kailash tour arranged by a registered travel and tour agency like Himalayan Adventure Treks.
Such an organized tour will include a pre-approved travel program along with the prearrangement of your hotel and transport, along with your required visa and permits.
Kindly register for our Lhasa Kailash tour one month in advance so all your arrangements can be overseen in time.
What are the Visa and Permit requirements for the Lhasa Kailash Tour?
For our Lhasa with Mount Kailash tour, we will be needing a Chinese Tourist Visa and a Tibet Visa (Tibet Travel Permit/TTP). Since you will be coming to Lhasa from Nepal, instead of an individual Chinese Visa, you will be needing a group Visa that regulates all the group members to be in and out of Tibet on the same date.
Since Kailash is in a remote, very sensitive military zone of Tibet, three other permits, the Military Permit, Alien Travel Permit/Public Security Bureau permit, and Foreign Affairs Permit, are also essential.
Himalayan Adventure Treks works closely with our respected Tibet Travel agency, which will oversee the arrangements of these permits while we look after your Chinese Group Visa and TTP.
Documents You must submit to us for the Visa and Permit
Digital Copy of your Original Passport
Passport must have an active time for a minimum 6 months after the Lhasa Kailash Tour
Digital 51 mm by 51 mm current photo against a plain white background with no glasses and makeup
TTP
For the unrestricted Lhasa Kailash tour 16 days journey, TTP is very essential, which includes all the tour details along with your personal info. So once the TTP is in for application, please understand that no single modification can be made.
Once we have your documents in the correct format, they will be submitted to the Tibet Tourism Bureau by our partner in Tibet. After 10-15 days, they will be approved, and we will get the invitation letter. The TTP will be held securely by our Tibetan guide and will be shown in Lhasa.
Chinese Group Visa
Since personal presence is mandatory for all the participants of the Lhasa Kailash tour, once all are gathered, a visit to the Chinese Embassy will be followed.
Along with the submission of all the original documents, your fingerprints will also be scanned. Your document will be returned once the Group Visa is approved.
Based on the time on hand, we will register for the group visa following any of the methods. The standard time will take four office weekdays and cost the fee of between US Dollars 70 to 170 per person for non-US nationals and for US Nationals, US Dollars 175 per person.
The second is the express method, which will take two or three office weekdays, and the fee is between US Dollars 90 to 180 per person.
Lhasa Kailash Tour is now open for Indian Passport Holders
The Lhasa Kailash tour has been recommenced for Indian passport holders from June 2025. China and India have already confirmed the reopening of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar through the Indian and Nepal border, and registration is also now open for the Lhasa Kailash tour.
Travel Insurance for Lhasa with Mount Kailash Tour
Given the remoteness and isolation of western Tibet, we strongly suggest that you get the specialized travel insurance for our Lhasa Kailash tour, which includes helicopter evacuation and transport up to an elevation of 5700 m, as well as coverage for medical and accidental expenses.
Please also mention clearly about the Lhasa Kailash tour and the hiking that is involved. Please note that your insurance must be valid for at least 16 days for our Lhasa Kailash tour.
