Trip Introduction
The secret land of Nepal, the Upper Mustang, is genuinely the crown jewel of this country, and riding a motorcycle through these lands is truly an epic journey. If you also think so, then welcome to our 12-day Upper Mustang motorbike tour – an exhilarating odyssey through the heights of an unknown land!
For nine straight days, our Upper Mustang motorbike tour will take you through the magnificent landscape of the great Himalayas, riding among the iconic summits of Nilgiri (7061 m), Annapurna (8091 m), Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Fishtail (6993 m), Tukuche (6920 m), Bhrikuti (6476 m), and Tilicho (7134 m).
For nine days, you will travel on stony roads where you will meet horse caravans, mopeds, motorcycles, wobbly buses, and jeeps. You will spend your time in this magnificent region that has successfully retained its ancient charm, originality, archaeological heritage, and cultural vibrancy for a millennium.
Truly, Upper Mustang is a real sanctuary for motorcyclists who seek to immerse themselves in both cultural richness and the splendor of the natural world.
With the majestic Himalayas as a frame, this north-central region of Nepal was closed to visitors until 1992, but today it has become one of Nepal’s most exclusive trekking areas and until a couple of years ago was only accessible on foot, by yak or pony train.
It was only opened up to motorized vehicles in 2010, but only a limited number of visitors are allowed each year, and to enter, you need a pre-paid permit.
The Gurung community largely settled in the areas leading up to Kagbeni, known as the lower Mustang, while the Lo Pas dwell in the area above Kagbeni, from Samar, which is distinguished as Upper Mustang. These people mainly practice Tibetan Buddhism, evident by the tracks decorated with sacred mantras inscribed on Tibetan prayer flags.
Regarding our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, you will mount on the Royal Enfield Himalayan and traverse the city highways of Kathmandu and Pokhara. In the days that follow, you will then ride through the picturesque landscapes of Kalopani, journeying into the magnificent Kali Gandaki gorge.
Then, passing through the enchanting villages of Kagbeni and Samar, you will ultimately arrive at the extraordinary Lo Manthang, the only walled kingdom in Nepal.
Here, the monasteries stand timeless, their walls still echo the events that have passed thousands of years ago. However, it is the Chhoser cave complex that will truly steal your heart. Subject to astonishing discoveries and scientific pursuits, this remarkable cave system still grants an insight into the rich cultural history of the area.
Then, our Upper Mustang motorbike tour will lead you to the enchanting Lower Mustang, where the pious Muktinath shrine, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, eagerly awaits your presence.
Here, you will have the opportunity for the divine purification rituals beneath the 108 natural springs, after which you will continue your journey to Tatopani.
The soothing thermal bath at Tatopani ( Hot Spring) will rejuvenate your spirit and prepare you for the return journey to Kathmandu via the picturesque Pokhara.
To further tantalize your senses, our Upper Mustang motorbike tour route also features continuous elevation changes with the astonishing Passes of 3850 m Syangboche, 4170 m Mui la, and 3900 m Tsarang Chu, making this adventure far from boring.
Particularly enchanting in the autumn and spring months, this Ppper Mustang motorbike tour is made for those who are always searching for physical challenges and possess prior riding experience.

A little later in the early evening, we will go to inspect our Royal Enfield Motorbike 350 cc bikes and take a test ride for a while so we get used to the Nepal traffic rules and get comfortable with our rides.

We will then go up along the Mugling-Narayanghat Highway towards Bandipur- an old Newar town that still has retained its hundreds of years of old heritage.
As we proceed with our ride, we can see the silent giants of Annapurna, Langtang, Ganesh, Fishtail, and Manaslu break through the clouds. Eventually, we will arrive at the lakeside town of Pokhara on the banks of Phewa with the majestic Annapurna massif as a backdrop.

To enjoy the brilliant sunshine, you can get on your motorbike and ride up towards the Sarangkot View Point. Or, you can just enjoy your morning with a hot sip of coffee with fresh mountain air breezing through the Fishtail and Annapurna.
Following breakfast, it is now time that we depart towards the Upper Mustang. We will ride for a few miles over the asphalted road of Baglung Highway and make a short stop at Kushma.
Here, we will discover the longest suspended bridge in Nepal as well as the second-highest bungee jump in the world. Now, firing our bike engines once more, we will proceed to Beni.
Now the asphalt road is over and the serious test of our skill begins. The first 80 km will be quite calm and after that, we will have to ride over the rock slabs and mud road.
The track now goes up along the Kali Gandaki River and it becomes narrower and narrower for about 25 km till we arrive at Tatopani (1200 m).
The forward track is now easy and steadily rises to 1446 m altitude at Dana. The surrounding greenery is simply breathtaking as the Rupse Chhahara (Waterfall) will delight our eyes.
However, the track will not stop rising taking us rapidly to the 2012 m elevation at Ghasa Village. It’s a small Thakali settlement where we can enjoy the renowned Thakali Meal.
Then we will progress to Kalopani but we will traverse Tukuche before we settle in our comfortable lodge of Kalopani.

Day 05: Ride from Kalopani to Samar (3650 m) 65 km.
After breakfast, we will set on our Upper Mustang Motorbike tour adventure again and now we will constantly go up. We will first ride past the Apple city of Marpha and drive towards Jomsom.
The air starts to feel fresher and the view is just a mighty painting that can make the most hardened person lose their breath. We will take our bikes alongside the massive Kali Gandaki and ride along the rock-strewn slope towards Ekle Bhatti.
Kagbeni is near and the landscape is now truly dry but spectacular which gives us the motivation we need to keep going. At the edge of Kagbeni, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Checkpost will examine our permits.
After they let us through, a rugged dirty, and rocky terrain will lead us up towards Tangbe. The snow-capped tip of 7061 m high Nilgiri seems exhilarating from up here.
Now the 10 km long descending track will direct us towards Chhusang (2980 m) and then to Chele. Once again, we will push our bikes for the uphill road till we reach Samar where we will now keep our bikes for overnight cooling.

Day 06: Ride from Samar to Lo Manthang (3860 m) 63 km.
After waking up in the living postcard-like surroundings, we will start to move through the territory of the Mustang Kingdom and the Tibetan Highlands.
The onward road is difficult, there will be climbs, cliffs, passes, and rocky screes. First, we will have to ignite our engines so we can ride up to the massive elevation of 3850 m of Syangboche La Pass.
We will then drive down to the charming village of the same name which will direct us further towards Ghami at 3520 m. Surprisingly, this small town is very beautiful and calm with its narrow streets running through.
The red and gray cliffs start to appear and the track rises gently past the long expansive Mani Walls. Get ready for the steep and vertically rising rough track that ascends to 4170 altitude at Mui La Pass.
From here, we will then drive down towards Dhakmar Village aka Ghar Gomba to visit the Lo-Ghekar Monastery restored and renowned for its splendid decor and views.
After this brief detour, we will now press on alongside the gorgeous Charang Khola that will guide us to Tsarang/Charang Village. This enchanting settlement is positioned high above the Tsarang Chu Canyon and hosts the five-story Dzong that serves both as the monastery and the fort.
Taking a look inside, we can see several well-sculpted Buddha statues and well-crafted thangkas as well. However, the surrounding panorama is more spectacular as we find ourselves tiny among the vast expansion of Bhrikuti, Annapurna I, Tilicho, and Nilgiri.
Following the wider road, we will head north and ride down to 3900 m Tsarang Chu. It separates the Charang from the Kingdom of Lo. Soon, we will have to overcome the 3950 altitudes of the windy Lo La Pass as we set our sight on Lo Manthang at a distance.

Activity: Ride, 5-6 hours

Max. Altitude: 3,860m/12,664ft. Lo- Manthang

Day 07: Explore Lo Manthang - Visit Chhoser Cave and Monastery.
We are in the capital of Mustang- the Lo Manthang where we will have the honor of spending one whole day and visiting its truly magnificent monasteries and caves.
First, we will visit the nomads here, their high-altitude yak camps, and taste their local tea made from yak milk. Then, we will head to explore some of the artistic old Gompas (Monasteries) of this kingdom such as 1420 built Champa Lhakang, 2 centuries old Chode Gompa, and the vibrant red Thugchen Gompa.
Next, we will head east of the Lo Manthang and ride along the 16 km long road that will lead us to the Chhoser Village. This tiny Tibetan-like settlement is mostly renowned among archaeologists, researchers, and scientists for hosting the remarkable caves believed to have been made thousands of years ago.
Among them, the particularly intriguing one is the Jhongu Cave system which has wooden ladders set inside each climbing to different chambers, tunnels, and floors.
It has five levels and some dating back an astonishing 3,000 years. After our exploration, we will return to our lodge in Lo Manthang for the night.

Day 08: Ride from Lo Manthang to Muktinath (3,710 m) 105 km.
Enjoy the brilliant sunshine gracing the white and blue peaks of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri for one last time. We have a long and technical ride ahead but the end of today’s travels will be incredibly sacred as we set foot in the revered land of Muktinath.
We will set off along the well-known terrain and scenery and ride back to Tsarang and Ghami eventually reaching Kagbeni. The small stretch of asphalt road will take us to Muktinath in less than half an hour. The Muktinath is more touristy than Mustang, especially because of its temple which brings many Nepalese and Indians.

We will also engage in the purification ritual by making the three encircling tours around the temple under the 108 fountains of cold water. Then we will also walk towards another temple that offers a splendid view of Annapurna.
We will then take our Royal Enfield and reach Jomsom through the sublime track. From here, we will continue towards Marpha known not only for its apples but also for its white houses.
Apples are spread out on the rooftops of these houses, drying in the warm sun. We may enjoy a tiny sip of some locally produced brandies, but not much, remember we have a journey to continue.
Slowly, the landscape begins to transition into much greener terrain covered with coniferous trees. The asphalt-wide road will reappear but it becomes more technical as we near Tatopani.
After settling in the Tatopani lodge, we will go out to relax in the hot water baths formed naturally.

Max. Altitude: 1,200m/3,937ft. Tatopani

Trip Information
Best Season for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
The Upper Mustang, protected from rainfall by the majestic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains, has a climate and terrain that is very similar to Tibet. Here, the land is dry and desolate with yellow and red cliffs along with high plateaus.
The air is also dry, with daytime heat reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius, which can suddenly drop to minus degrees at night. But it doesn’t mean the area receives no rain at all, it experienced a heavy flood in 2021 that displaced thousands of people.
And, we must also remember that for a successful mountain bike tour in Nepal, the driest roads and trails are most essential. Therefore, autumn from September through November is the prime time for the Upper Mustang motorbike tour as these months typically offer dry paths and splendid views of the surroundings and the high mountains.
Spring from March through May is also a good choice for the Upper Mustang motorbike tour, as it adds a refreshing green to the once-barren landscape. However, the summer rains from July to August can obstruct the lower trails of Upper Mustang that traverse Annapurna.
On the other hand, winter, which lasts from December to February, brings snow and harsh winds to Upper Mustang, making it nearly impossible to travel through.
Difficulty Level of Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
The Upper Mustang motorbiek tour is a journey that can be physically demanding, adventurous, enjoyable, and filled with the beauty of Nepal. This tour can be a complete package for experienced bikers who have already taken some off-road and mountain-riding adventures in high-altitude areas.
However, for those who are new and are not accustomed to off-road biking tours, this tour can be very tough. It is because, after you leave Beni, the smooth graveled city Highways will disappear and the terrain becomes a true test of your riding capabilities.
You will find yourself riding mostly standing on your bike seat rather than sitting comfortably. In addition, you will not have some comfortable easy-to-ride bikes but dirt and mountaineering bikes that are specifically built for challenging landscapes like this. As a result, your driving approach will be entirely different.
Also, the tracks in Mustang are not easy to go roads rather they are the trails forged by the locals for them and their livestock. Thus, these routes are filled with rocks and gorges that sometimes rise to the Passes which height reach above many mountains in the world.
Thus our Upper Mustang motorbike tour can be an incredibly beautiful and thrilling experience, but it requires a bit of preparation. A beginner rider should first start with simpler off-road motorcycle trails before going on this adventure.
Safety and Support during the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
Our Upper Mustang bike tour is certainly a thrilling challenge yet it is also a completely safe journey through one of the best landscapes of Nepal. As your travel partner, we will not only take care of your logistics but will also ensure the safety and comfort of each of our riders.

Our skilled motorbike guide, certified by the Nepali Government will also be with you to guide you en route.
On the other hand, the Upper Mustang region has now turned into a complete lodge trekking and tour destination offering a comfortable night for each of its guests with a full belly.

On the other hand, the remarkable terrain of Upper Mustang will keep you twisting, turning, climbing, and descending which will enhance the exhilaration of your bike ride during the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour.
Far from the bustling crowds, these alone paths of Upper Mustang amidst nature promise a connection and an experience that stands apart from any other trek or drive in Nepal.
Transportation during the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
On our Upper Mustang motorbike tour, you can either bring your own bike or take advantage of the one we offer. Without a doubt, the rugged mountain roads of Upper Mustang are challenging so it is essential to know how to handle your bike.
You should know when to engage the clutches, make the turns, and decide when to ride or dismount. When you decide to ride your own bike, you will obviously have the freedom to travel in a way that suits you, as you are familiar with its mechanics and you can easily manage any repairs.
However, bringing your own bike from abroad means lengthy, stressful, and expensive custom procedures. In such case, you can use the bikes we provide for the mountain bike tour in Nepal- the grand classic Royal Enfield 350 cc– perfect for tackling the challenging terrain of Nepal.

Important Information: If you decide to transport your motorcycle for the Upper Mustang motorbike tour in Nepal, please share its specifications with us so we can check for suitable technical assistance in Nepal.
Altitude Sickness on Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
It is a common misunderstanding that altitude sickness only affects trekkers. In fact, drivers and bike riders often experience altitude sickness more quickly as they ascend the altitude rapidly than gradually like those on trekking journeys.
Although the entire Upper Mustang motorcycle tour remains below 4000 m, the high-altitude dry air in this region is known to have lower oxygen levels than the other parts of Nepal.
Therefore, acclimatization is very important in this tour, more so than on other adventures in Nepal. We have therefore arranged a rest day in Kathmandu right after your arrival, giving your body the chance to adjust to the Nepalese air.
Since Lo Manthang is our highest point at 3,860 m, we want to ensure that every biker is well-acclimatized before we make that ascent. To achieve this, we have designed most of the ride to be short, just 4 to 6 hours so you will have plenty of time to relax.
We have also included a rest day in Lo Manthang for exploration and further acclimatization. Still, even with these measures in place, some of our riders may show physical manifestations such as trouble sleeping, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, stomachache, rapid breathing and pulse rates, headaches, and fatigue.
If you also have any of these symptoms, please communicate with our guide immediately. The best way to tackle the condition is to go down to the lower elevated zone not on the bike but on the jeep with our guide.
You may also take Diamox (Acetazolamide) which can ease your breathing and relieve you from mild symptoms. You can also consider taking these pills before the start of your Upper Mustang motorbike tour journey to stimulate acclimatization.
In order to avoid altitude sickness, you should make sure to carry water with you on your bike and take sips throughout your ride. Also, adding garlic ginger lemon soup to your diet can be quite beneficial as well.
Preparation for the Upper Mustang motorbike tour
You cannot excuse yourself from the necessary preparation for our Upper Mustang motorbike tour; remember it’s vital. For nine days straight, you will be riding for 4 to 7 hours daily, covering distances of 60 to 70 kilometers.
Therefore, you must be sure that you are ready to take on this challenge for which you should establish a daily workout regimen focused on building muscular endurance for at least a month. Aim for lighter weights and more repetitions to help reduce muscle fatigue.
Then, you can take shorter journeys on your motorbikes on the city roads slowly transitioning it on the off roads and then eventually taking it to the mountain roads.
Be very attentive to your body’s reaction and identify the right posture for yourself. Also, practice twists and turns in every curve and try to control the grip on your clutches.
And remember, precaution is also needed when you are actually hitting the Mustang road. Each morning, make it a habit to check your bike’s tires for air, inspect the brakes and clutches, and verify the oil and fuel levels.
Don’t forget to carry a spare key in your pocket and avoid speeding. Take regular breaks to stay alert, and stop every few kilometers to stretch, relax, eat, and hydrate.
Accommodation and Meals during Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
On our Upper Mustang motorbike tour, you will have restful nights in double rooms at carefully chosen three-star hotels (local standard) in the city centers of Kathmandu and Pokhara.
As you ride towards Mustang, your accommodations will be in local lodges. These lodgings may lack luxury but they are perfectly suitable given their remote settings.

Travel Insurance for Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
Travel insurance is a must-have component for our Upper Mustang motorbike tour. Without the proper policy papers, you won’t receive the restricted area permit needed for the tour.
Additionally, the insurance will also safeguard you and your bike financially in case of any medical needs, damages, breakdowns, or accidents. It will also help you to cover costs related to damages to your motorcycle or third parties caused due to your ignorance or theft.
When you secure insurance for your tour, choose a policy that includes special provisions for bikers, particularly for protective equipment. It is also essential that the policy covers air rescue expenses at elevations reaching 4,000 m.

Permits and Papers for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour
For our Upper Mustang motorbike tour, we must secure two important permits: the RAP (Restricted Area Permit) and the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project).
The RAP permit will allow us to access the distinct areas beyond the Kagbeni Village including the Lo Manthang. Only a registered Nepalese trek and tour company, like ours, can apply for this permit after they organize a group tour consisting of at least two participants with an authorized local tour guide. Likewise, the ACAP permit will allow us access to areas below Kagbeni.
The registration and permit acquisition process will be managed by our guide, and the expenses are already covered in our Upper Mustang Motorbike tour package.

How many km will we ride per day on average?

I have only ridden on the major roads of the city. Can I participate in your Upper Mustang motorbike tour?
Absolutely not! The roads of Upper Mustang are not the straight paths that you are used to in your city. In fact, they twist and bend through the rugged terrain that can be treacherous sometimes. Therefore, you must have past experience with mountain roads, be an expert bike rider, and fully understand the essentials of safe biking.

Yes, if you are excessively tired from biking, then you can bypass the ride to Muktinath and travel directly from Lo Manthang to Tatopani via Chhusang.

Yes, the high altitude does impact motorcycle performance, causing a power drop of roughly 10% for every 1000 m gained. However, we will only reach up to 4000 m so there will be not much impact.
Since Upper Mustang is the rain shadow zone, can I ride to Upper Mustang in June?
Although it is not entirely impossible, reaching Upper Mustang in June can be quite challenging.
