Trip Introduction
Himalayan Adventure Treks presents you with its grand journey of the western Nepal motorbike expedition, one of the most fascinating and evocative adventures, with the added magic of motorbike travel.
The legendary Himalayan Beast 411 or 450 or Honda CRF 250 motorcycles will accompany you on the itinerary of our western Nepal motorbike expedition that will take you to the diverse landscape of Nepal: from its lively, chaotic Kathmandu to the dynamic Terai plains at the Indian border, to the tranquil beauty of Lake Rara, and the towering giants of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in Pokhara.
If you wish to discover the other hidden face of Nepal aside from just high peaks and eternal snow, then believe us, our western Nepal motorbike expedition 16 days trip is made for you.
You will encounter the expansive cultivated fields, green rice terraces, and the national park of Chitwan of the southern plain of Nepal, where you will spot the last remaining species of one-horned rhinos, and with a bit of luck, even the Royal Bengal Tiger.
You will also experience the coexistence of Buddhism and Hinduism in Lumbini, and ultimately discover the literal birthplace of the founder of Buddhism, Buddha.
Then, our western Nepal motorbike expedition will take you along rugged dirt paths filled with stones, sand, and large puddles of the Rara National Park to the splendid wild beauty of Lake Rara (2990 m), the highlight of this trip, encircled by the gigantic ridges of Chuchhemara Peak (4039 m), Malika Kand (3444 m), and Ruma Kand (3731 m).
Thus, unanimously, the trip is also named the Western Nepal motorbike tour with Rara Lake excursion. With exceptional organization from our side, this journey will guide you along 90 percent black-topped pitch Highways and 10 percent challenging dirt roads in western Nepal.
With multiple stops in the western villages of the Rara region, you will also meet Muguali or Mugum communities along with Jumleli people of Chhetris, Brahmins, and Thakuris.
Thus, our western Nepal motorbike expedition is an ultimate journey of Nepal with natural, cultural, traditional, and historical experiences, with the magic of a thrilling ride across the plains and hills of southern and western Nepal.
So if you desire a mix of comfort and challenge with a special narration of rural Nepal, then welcome to our western Nepal motorbike expedition.
Our proposed Route for the Western Nepal Motorbike Expedition
To begin our western Nepal motorbike tour with Rara Lake excursion, we will first explore the four heritage sites in Kathmandu: Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Then, we will choose our saddle for the road and set off towards the southern plains of Chitwan National Park, which is Nepal’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
With the Siwalik Hills and forest, the park is home to leopards, Bengal tigers, sloth bears, elephants, rhinos, crocodiles, aquatic birds, and many more majestic creatures. We will also interact with the colorful Tharu tribes, who have developed impressive immunity to malaria.
Next, our Western Nepal motorbike expedition will guide us along the East-West Highway to Lumbini, where we will visit the Maya Devi Temple, the sacred garden, Pushkarini Pond, Ashoka Pillars, and many international Buddhist monasteries.
From here, we will head west to Kohalpur, a quickly developing town rich in historical buildings and sites. Our route of the western Nepal motorbike expedition will then take us from the hot, humid plains into the hilly Karnali region, with Dhaulagiri I, Himalchuli, Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, and Annapurna keeping us company as we progress towards Lake Rara.
On the way, we will meet the historical Sinja Valley, which used to be the capital of the Malla rulers. After exploring the lake, we will retrace the same off-road track back to Rukum Paschim (West), known for its landscape of 52 ponds and 53 hills.
Finally, as our western Nepal motorbike expedition 16 days trip comes to an end, we will ride along the main highway of central Nepal, reaching Kathmandu through Bartibang, Baglung, and Pokhara.

Trip Information
Best Time
The weather in Nepal is literally unpredictable; one moment it is sunny, and the next, a storm rolls in. For a motorbike tour, the driving conditions should be perfect with dry roads and nice daytime heat.
This kind of weather is usual in autumn (September to November) in Nepal, when you get pleasant days, clear skies, and the festive atmosphere of Dashain and Tihar. Visibility will also be fantastic, offering stunning views.
Similarly, spring (March to May) feels like paradise for riders, with blooming rhododendrons, warm weather, and minimal rain. Winter (December to February) riding, on the other hand, can be tough for beginners but is a magical time for experienced riders.
In places like Chitwan, Kathmandu, Lumbini, Kohalpur, and Pokhara, the air and skies are crystal clear with perfect mountain views and great wildlife spotting in Chitwan.
However, in the hilly Karnali region, temperatures drop significantly, and conditions can be harsh. Rara Lake may even freeze partially or completely.
It is best to avoid the summer monsoon season (June to August) when heavy rains can lead to dangerous road conditions, floods, and landslides, making visibility poor.
Difficulty of the Western Motorbike Tour with Rara Lake Excursion
Our western Nepal motorbike tour with Rara Lake excursion promises to be a very adventurous, thrilling, and enjoyable journey for those who are experienced in riding on off-track roads filled with fine sandy grains and puddles.
But for those who are new to the off-road track riding, this can be a bit of a challenging adventure. As you ride further into the western Karnali region, the landscape becomes rugged, with sharp ascents and turns.
Particularly on the route to the Army Post in the Rara Lake region, you will have to tackle seven steep downhill turns that can be challenging if you lack the skills to manually maneuver your bike.
However, 80 percent of the journey will take place on well-paved blacktop highways, so you will have a comfortable and easy overall experience.
For our western Nepal motorbike expedition, we exclusively use well-maintained motorcycles like the Himalayan 411 or 450 or the Honda CRF. Additionally, a mechanic will be with you who can address any minor issues that may arise, and a support jeep will be available to provide you with rest whenever needed.
Is the Western Nepal Motorbike Expedition 16 days trip suitable for beginner riders?
If you are a beginner rider and are keen to participate in our western Nepal motorbike expedition, then you must prepare yourself by learning to ride on dirt roads, ascend and descend steep slopes, maneuver the bike manually, and stop quickly.
You should also be in good physical condition and have some riding experience on an on-road track. The entire program of our western Nepal motorbike expedition is designed to accommodate the speed of the group.
Each day, the riding duration also consists of enough breaks in between for stretching and rest. Still, as a beginner rider, you must be capable of riding at high altitudes independently.
Thus, to join our western Nepal motorbike expedition 16 days trip, we suggest you practice riding on dirt roads in advance to increase your skill and confidence.
During the trip, our guide, who is also a committed rider, will assist you and keep on guiding you so you feel comfortable on the road with your machine.
Your Safety during our Western Nepal Motorbike Expedition
Keeping you safe throughout our western Nepal motorbike expedition is our utmost priority. Thus, we will start by making sure you have the right bike that you feel comfortable riding.
You will also get a chance to test ride it before we set off, so you can get familiar with Nepal’s traffic rules and roads. Plus, we will be providing you with detailed info on driving techniques in Nepal.
As the adventure starts, our support jeep will accompany you and carry your luggage, spare parts, repair tools, rain gear, first aid supplies, and a satellite communication system.
If anyone gets injured, our support jeep will assist in your transportation to nearest available medical facility.
You will also have the company of our competent guide, who is not only a professional rider but is also well-trained in first-aid care. He will check on your well-being each day before and after each day’s ride.
Likewise, in any emergency, if a helicopter rescue is needed, we will arrange it quickly. We will also ensure that you have the right travel insurance to cover its cost.
We also adapt a flexible itinerary for our western Nepal motorbike expedition, so in case of any unexpected weather conditions, our guide will take you on an alternate trail or shorten the day ride.
In any case, we guarantee the success of the trip as much as possible and go as planned, even if the conditions change.
Safety Protocols that you should practice
For our western Nepal motorbike expedition, we always make sure that the bike you choose from is well inspected and maintained by certified mechanics before and after each trip.
During the trip also, our guide will always perform a quick check every morning to make sure that the bikes are ready for the road. He will also do the repairs for common issues such as punctures or minor mechanical problems.
These are the safety management that we ensure for you on our western Nepal motorbike expedition. But as a responsible rider, you must also comply to certain safety protocols such as :
- Always wear safety riding equipment such as gloves, helmets, knee pads, and jackets.
- Drink plenty of water whether you are thirsty or not and avoid drinking too much alcohol.
- Always follow the guide’s instructions, keep a safe distance, and ride at a speed that matches your ability.
- As a rider, you should also inspect your bike, including tires for air, brakes, clutches, and oil and fuel levels.
- Take regular breaks, stay alert, and stretch and relax between rides.
- Most importantly, get travel insurance that covers motorcycle accidents and medical evacuations.
Altitude Sickness/Acute Mountain Sickness
On our western Nepal motorbike expedition, the route won’t go above 3000 m in elevation, with the highest point being 2990 m at Rara Lake. So the risk of AMS is not too extreme in our trip considering the altitude.
Still, there will be quick changes in elevation and atmosphere during the journey, such as ascending from the southern Terai plain to the hilly region of Karnali, where the air can get cold and dry.
These changes may arise some mild AMS symptoms in some motorcyclists, such as headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, and dizziness. To keep such risks low, make sure you drink lots of water, ascend slowly and carefully, and take enough breaks both during and after the ride.
We have planned regular stops along the way, like in Kathmandu and Chitwan, with manageable riding distances each day so you can adjust to the new altitude each time.
If you still notice any AMS symptoms, please take it slow and lower your activity level. Rest enough and sleep long, also taking Diamox can help, but only if your doctor recommends it.
Our guide will monitor each rider’s health and ensure everyone is safe during the trip. We also urge you to respect any decision made by our guide for your health and safety.
Physical and Mental Training and Preparation
Our western Nepal motorbike tour with Rara Lake excursion does not contain long or challenging stages overall. So you won’t need extreme training for the trip; if you are in decent shape and can ride for a few hours, you will be fine on the trip.
However, to make it more enjoyable, it is a good idea that you dedicate your time to some training. We advise you to focus on your core stability, balance, posture, and leg strength.
There are some rugged sections to tackle in the Karnali region with sharp bends and a few climbs. So make sure you are physically fit to endure such challenges.
You can try some aerobic exercises like cycling, running, or walking before the trip. If you are new to off-road biking, then you should definitely practice on dirt roads. Also, familiarize yourself with the main features of the bike and how to handle it manually.
As for mental readiness, make up your mind for any unpredictability on the road, such as related to the weather. Be prepared to slow down and ride alone, which sometimes may happen.
Accommodation, Meal, and Drinks
In our Western Nepal motorbike expedition 16 days trip, we have selected accommodations that fit the rhythm of your trip. In major cities such as Kathmandu, Lumbini, Chitwan, Pokhara, and Kohalpur, you will stay in comfortable three-star hotels to recharge after a day’s journey.
You will have a twin room at your disposal with its own bathroom, hot and cold showers, charging outlets, and WiFi. In the Karnali region, however, you may not find such hotel accommodations, but you will sleep in family-run tea houses often owned by locals.
They also provide double and sometimes triple rooms with basic yet inviting comforts. Keep in mind, you may have to adjust to the shared utilities regarding toilets, laundry, and charging.
Regarding meals, we will take care of the welcome and farewell dinners in Kathmandu, as well as full board meals in Chitwan and on the trek day to Lake Rara.
On other days, you will have the freedom to enjoy your food and drinks as you please, without any limitations. In the cities, you will have plenty of choices between Nepali and international cuisine, while in the Karnali region, you will mainly find Nepali dishes like Dal Vat, momos, noodles, and sel roti.
Generally, 25 to 30 US Dollars per day per person will be enough to cover your meals and drinks.
Transportation
We will take care of all your transportation needs during our western Nepal motorbike expedition. No matter when you arrive or depart, one of our team members will be with you to manage your airport-hotel transfer in a private vehicle.
For your tours around Kathmandu, we will again provide private transport with a professional driver and guide. For the trip, we offer dual-sport dirt sport bikes that are well-maintained and serviced.
We will also provide you with a support jeep with spare parts, tools, fuel, extra tires, an onboard mechanic, and your luggage. Likewise, helmets and basic safety gear will be included, but we suggest you bring your personal helmet and additional safety gear if you like.
Mobile Network and Internet/WiFi
You can definitely expect good internet and mobile networks in all the places we visit on our western Nepal motorbike expedition. In major cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Lumbini, and Kohalpur, you can trust the NCELL network, but we suggest you get the NTC/Namaste network for better 3G/4G coverage in the Karnali region.
WiFi is almost free in the key cities with better signal and speed, but in the Karnali villages, it can be limited. For example, Rukum Karnali has Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) that is now expanding, while in Rakam Karnali and Nagma, WiFi may not be as reliable or available.
Charging Facilities
Electricity is accessible all the time in all the prime cities of this trip, but it can be inconsistent in the villages of the Karnali region. There can be regular power cuts and low voltage as well.
Therefore, ensure you charge your mobile and devices whenever you get the opportunity in the tea houses, but be aware of a small fee to be paid in situ to the teahouse owner. Also, bring a portable universal charger, spare batteries, and a power bank.
Private or Group Western Nepal Motorbike Tour with Rara Lake Excursion
Since we won’t be riding through the restricted areas of Rara Lake, you can either join a group or private western Nepal motorbike tour with Rara Lake excursion.
If you want to create your own itinerary, a private trip is perfect for you. You can decide how far you want to travel each day, the places you want to visit and take breaks at, and when you want to rest.
Private trips are more personal, which is why this mode of travel is great for couples or groups of families and friends.
On the other hand, group trips let you meet new and commonly motivated motorcyclists from around the world. You will have a new circle of friends, and you will also feel much safer on the trip.
In group travel, we ensure that the group size is small so that equal attention can be given to each member. Also, on a group trip, you can go at your own pace and feel much safer with other riders around.
If you prefer to travel alone, you can book a private western Nepal motorbike expedition where you will only have our guide for company. You can also join our already formed group for budget affordability.
Extra Expenses
Please note that you will need to cover the costs for all meals and drinks on the trip, except when you are in Chitwan and during the trek to Rara Lake. If you wish to take part in any extra activities in Pokhara, the additional cost will be your responsibility as well.
Likewise, personal riding gear, insurance for accidents, property loss, damage to third parties, travel and health insurance, helicopter rescues, and personal expenses are not included in our Western Nepal motorbike expedition 16 days trip cost.
Also, tips for the staff (mechanic, guide, and driver) are not covered in the trip cost. Our company will look after the minor repairs of the bike, but if there is any extra damage due to your negligence, rough handling, accidents, or theft, you will have to pay for those costs.
Permits for the Western Nepal Motorbike Expedition
For our western Nepal motorbike expedition, we need to have the following permits:
- Rara National Park Permit: The route that we take from Nagma village onwards will pass through the Rara National Park territory. Thus, we need to get the park entrance permit, which costs NPR 3000 per person for foreigners is usually NPR 3,000, NPR 1500 per person for SAARC nationals, and NPR 100 per person for Nepali citizens.
- TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System Card): Since Karnali is a far western remote region of Nepal, we also need the TIMS Card, allowing the associated authorities to know about our routes. Its fee is NPR 2,000 for foreign nationals, NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, and NPR 100 for Nepali citizens. This card will only be granted to a certified travel agency like Himalayan Adventure Treks.
- Heritage and Monastery Entrance fees: We have included numerous UNESCO heritage sites tours along with monastery visits in our trip, for which a specific entrance fee needs to be paid on-site.
- Chitwan National Park entrance fee and price for Jungle activities
Himalayan Adventure Treks will take care of all the paperwork on your behalf and will also pay the cost.
Please note that some online sites may say that a restricted permit is required for the Rara Lake trip. This permit is only necessary if you decide to go through certain VDCs. However, since our route goes through Nagma, we won’t need a restricted permit.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is essential for our western Nepal motorbike expedition, and it should have coverage for riding motorcycles of 250 cc or larger. Also, ensure that your insurance has the repatriation assistance coverage that covers medical expenses, medical repatriation, and mountain rescue by helicopter up to 3000 m altitude.
Additionally, you should get civil liability insurance for abroad that covers any damage you may cause to others. We also suggest you get the trip cancellation/interruption insurance and coverage for theft or damage to personal belongings.
Also, ensure your insurance will cover costs if you cause any damage to the motorcycle.
