مقدمه سفر
If you are looking for an ultimate trans-Himalayan pilgrimage journey, then you have come to the right place. We present you with our epic Lhasa Kailash tour that spans not only the revered Kailash but also the roof of the world, the North Everest Base Camp (5200 m) in Tibet.
In our Lhasa Kailash tour, we have incorporated the route that immerses you in profound spirituality, the 53 km long outer circuit route around the North Face of Kailash.
Apart from a spiritually rejuvenating route, our Lhasa Kailash tour 15 days adventure, has also integrated the stark high-altitude landscape of Tibet, its imperial history, and breathtaking natural wonders.
However, it will be a relatively demanding journey that will challenge your physical and mental limits while you step into the most sacred landscape on the planet.
Our Lhasa Kailash tour itinerary begins from Kathmandu, from where you will take a spectacular flight to Lhasa, the cradle of Tibetan heritage. Here, you will spend three nights that will aid you in your initial altitude acclimatization.
Over two full days in Lhasa, you will walk the time-honored stone steps of Potala Palace, the historic home of the Dalai Lama in winter. You will also explore the golden-topped Jokhang Temple, join the pilgrims along the Barkhor Market, observe the philosophical debate of monks in Sera Monastery, and explore the rich history of Drepung Monastery.
Our Lhasa Kailash tour will then continue along the Friendship Highway, leading you toward the North Everest Base Camp in Tibet. But first, you will drive past the sapphire-blue waters of sacred Yamdrok Lake and cross the massive high pass of Karo La (5010 m) before reaching the historic towns of Gyantse and Shigatse.
Your route will then climb you over the major geographical highlight of Gawu La Pass (5350 m), from where you can observe the shining white faces of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma.
Your drive will then end at Rongbuk Monastery (5009 m), the world’s highest spiritual monastery erected right before the sheer North side of Everest.
You will drive up to the newly located Everest Base Camp site and spend the night in the monastery beneath Everest. Now, the religious and spiritual segment of our Lhasa Kailash tour begins as you head to Darchen which sits in the remote western border of Ngari.
It is here that the mystical Mount Kailash (6638 m) along with Lake Mansarovar (4590 m) is located. For the four main religions of the world (Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpos), this sacred summit is the earthly manifestation of Mount Meru and the cosmic home of Lord Shiva.
From Darchen, your legendary three-day 53 km foot pilgrimage around Kailash (also known as Kailash Parikrama or Kora) begins when you will be face to face with Kailash’s vertical North rock face. However, the ultimate day and the main challenge occur on the second day of the Kailash Yatra.
You will conquer the formidable 5630 m high Dolma La Pass before descending into the peaceful valley of Zutulpuk. On the third day of this trek, you will complete your foot pilgrimage, being completely renewed and ready to receive the spiritual blessings free of all worldly delusions and past karmic sins.
Now, our Lhasa Kailash tour will continue with descent to the pristine holy mother lake of Mansarovar created from Brahma’s mind. After washing away all your lifetime sins at the lake, you will head south toward the international border at Gyirong between China and Nepal.
Then, the Langtang National Reserve and Trishuli Valley will lead your way to Kathmandu, thus concluding your supreme Lhasa Kailash tour with the Everest Base Camp journey.
Overall, our Lhasa Kailash tour is not only your standard vacation but also a transformative expedition that rewards you with a profound sense of peace, spiritual renewal, and memories of the most majestic landscapes on our planet.

Day 03: Lhasa Monastery Day Tour (Drepung and Sera Monastery)
Today, we will take a deeper look into the spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism. After breakfast, our guide will drive us around 8 km west of Central Lhasa.
Soon, we will be at the foot of Mount Gambo Utse, where the Drepung Monastery is located. Once the largest monastery in the world, it used to house up to 10,000 monks in its glorious days.
Founded in 1416, the monastery consists of a grand Assembly Hall, living quarters of the Dalai Lamas, and centuries-old Buddhist murals, chapels, and massive statues of Maitreya (the Future Buddha).
Once the exploration is complete, we will eat our lunch and head to the northern part of Lhasa, where Sera Monastery is located. Founded in 1419, this monastery still stands as a protective home for ancient Buddhist philosophy.
Here, we can explore its beautiful colleges and dark corners where ancient scriptures are well kept. Around 3 PM, we will be able to witness the energetic monk debate in the courtyard.
Once complete, our guide will take us back to our hotel in Lhasa.

Day 04: Lhasa Monastery Day Tour (Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market)
Today is one of the major highlighting day of our Lhasa Kailash tour. After breakfast, our guide will drive us to the center of the valley where Marpo Ri (Red Hill) is located.
Atop this hill, Potala Palace stands majestically, and to reach it, we will have to slowly and steadily climb the steep and uneven steps. Once atop, we will explore the White Palace, which once served as the living quarters, offices, and political court of the Dalai Lamas.
Then, we will head to Red Palace, where we can look at prayer halls, study rooms, and marvelous golden burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas.
We will now descend from the palace and eat our lunch. Then, we will head to the old part of Lhasa, where Jokhang Temple is located. Built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, it houses the Jowo Shakyamuni statue, a life-sized portrayal of Buddha at age twelve.
Directly surrounding the temple is the Barkhor Street, which serves as a very important Kora circuit for the pilgrims. In the evening, the street turns into a vibrant marketplace where we can browse handmade carpets, Tibetan incense, turquoise jewelry, prayer beads, copper singing bowls, and beautiful thangka paintings.

Take some time to admire the Karo La Glacier up front. We will now descend from the high pass and arrive in Gyantse, where we can visit the unique Palcho Monastery/Pelkor Chode Monastery.
Inside its compound, we can see the 32 m tall, multi-tiered, nine-story Kumbum Stupa. We will now drive the final 90 km flat highway to reach Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city.

Day 06: Drive from Shigatse to Everest Base Camp, 5200 m, 340 km, 7 to 8 hours
Today is a very monumental day on our Lhasa Kailash tour with the Everest Base Camp adventure. However, first thing in the morning, we will visit the majestic Tashilhunpo Monastery.
Founded in 1447, it is the home of the Panchen Lama, where we can see a 26 m tall statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha.
Next, we will jump into our vehicle and drive along the Friendship Highway. We will pass through Lhatse and cross the Tsola Pass (4600 m).
We will then climb the dramatic, smooth mountain road and reach the first major pass of Gyatso La (5248 m). This marks our official entry into the Chomolungma (Everest) National Nature Reserve.
We will now arrive at the checkpoint of Shegar (New Tingri), where we will leave the main highway and travel to EBC. The road ahead will lead us to Gawu La Pass (5350 m), where we can see five high snow-domed peaks of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma.
Descending from the pass, we will now drive through the stark terrain and arrive at Rongbuk Monastery (5009 m), the highest religious monastery on Earth.
After admiring the white north face of Everest, we will settle into our accommodation (tent guesthouse or the basic Rongbuk guesthouse).
Kindly note that the Chinese authorities moved the main tourist EBC to the area around Rongbuk Monastery. A clear boundary and a checkpoint have also been established beyond the area.
So, only mountaineers who hold the formal climbing permits for the Everest summit can reach the actual campsite. In addition, eco buses are utilized to drive all the way to the monastery, and from there, we will have to get in the electric shuttle to reach the allocated EBC.

Our morning will start with catching the final glimpse of the shining Everest summit. Then, after breakfast, we will head west and drive along the road toward Western Tibet.
We will climb through the high mountain passes and arrive at the shore of Peiku Tso Lake (4590 m). The backdrop of Shishapangma will steal our hearts while Kyang (Tibetan wild asses), Tibetan antelopes, and cute Himalayan marmots can be seen calmly grazing around the green pasture of the lake.
We will leave the lake behind and head on the main road that will lead us north to Saga. We will cross a modern bridge spanning the Yarlung Tsangpo River and arrive in Saga for the night.

Day 08: Drive from Saga to Darchen, 4575 m, 500 km, 7 to 8 hours
Today will be the longest driving day of our Lhasa Kailash tour itinerary. After we leave Saga, the smooth G219 National Highway beside the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo) will take us to the nomadic village of Old Dzongba.
On our way, we will also see the perfectly lying Dargyeling monastery before we reach the summer settlement of Paryang. A little further flows the Horchu River.
A military checkpoint will examine our permits and registration, after which we will cross the high pass of Mayum La (5211 m). Gurla Mandhata/Naimonanyi Peak (7694 m) towers high above the horizon of the pass.
Next, we will descend from the pass and reach Lake Mansarovar within two hours. Here, we will see the diamond-shaped face of Mount Kailash for the first time.
We will continue further for another 35 to 45 minutes across the Barkha plain till we reach Darchen, which sits directly at the foot of Mount Kailash. From here, we will start the 3-day Parikrama of Kailash.
If you plan on hiring the local porter or yak to help carry you and your backpack, then let our guide know at once so he can arrange it at the registration office in advance.

Day 09: Trek from Darchen to Dirapuk, 4900 m, 12 km, 5 to 6 hours
Today, we will officially begin our foot pilgrimage around Kailash. From Darchen, we will drive west along the foot of the ridge and reach the Tarboche flagpole (4724 m).
Here, we can see a massive flagpole covered in thousands of prayer flags. This site is also called the Yama Dwara (Gate guarded by the Lord of Death according to Hinduism).
This is also the site where the famous annual Saga Dawa festival is celebrated. Here, the local porter and yak you have hired will meet you and follow you alongside the trek route around Kailash.
We will walk around the flagpole and follow the wide, gravelled, rugged path and pass by the traditional Tibetan Sky Cremation Site. Then, we will follow the Lha Chu River and pass by numerous small tea stops.
In clear weather, we can even look at the smooth west face of Kailash. Trekking further, we will cross a footbridge and arrive at Dirapuk, where Kailash reveals its north face.
Prepare to expect the rustic dormitory-styled guesthouse here for the night with no running water or heating.

Day 10: Trek from Dirapuk to Zutulpuk, 4790 m, via Dolma La Pass, 5630 m, 22 km, 9 to 10 hours
Today presents the most challenging and physically demanding journey of our entire Lhasa Kailash tour. Today will also be most spiritual when we cross the legendary Dolma La Pass, the highest point of our Lhasa Kailash tour with Everest Base Camp.
From Dirapuk, we will continuously climb uphill through the Lha Chu Valley and pass by Jarok Donkhang. We will also pass Shiva Tsal Cemetery (5330 m), a sacred site covered with old clothing, shoes, and locks of hair left behind by pilgrims.
This act signifies your consent to leave your old life, sins, and ego behind so you can be reborn once you reach the top of the pass. After a few hours of steep climbing, we will finally reach the pass covered in a sea of thousands of colorful prayer flags.
This is the Green Tara or Dolma La Pass, also home of Goddess Tara. We will leave the pass and descend along the steep rocky path. On the right, we will see Gauri Kund (Thukje Chenpo Tso/5608 m), where, according to Hindu tradition, Goddess Parvati bathed.
We will then cross through the Axe of Karma, which completely cuts all our ties with our past Karma. Now the trail will flatten out into a gentle dirt trail that will guide us to Zutulpuk.
Here also, the accommodation arrangement will be pretty rustic, like in Dirapuk.

Here, our vehicle will pick us up and drive us toward Darchen, thus marking the end of our pilgrimage around Kailash. We will now head south to reach Lake Mansarovar, which reflects the peak of Mount Gurla Mandhata.
Before we check in at our accommodation, we will engage in the traditional pilgrimage of the lake, which we can perform in a government vehicle or on foot.
Then we will spend our evening walking along its peaceful shoreline watching the sun setting over Kailash.

We will then jump in our vehicle and drive east along the broad and smooth G219 National Highway. We will once again drive back up the high Mayum La Pass and descend to the flat road.
We will then journey through wide Tibetan valleys and dry alpine grasslands. Once more, our journey will guide us over the Yarlung Tsangpo River bridge before we arrive at Saga for the night.

By early afternoon, we will arrive in Gyirong town, which serves as the Tibetan border before we reach Nepal.

After a farewell with our Tibetan companion, we will exit the Tibetan border and walk across the Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge spanning the gorge.
We will then get to Rasuwagadhi, where we will step into the Nepal Immigration office. We will then meet our Nepali guide and driver waiting for us with a private vehicle.
The unpaved, bumpy road will continue for a few hours into the Langtang National Park. We will journey through Ghatte Khola, Timure, Syabrubesi, Dhunche and Rani Pauwa villages.

If you like to elevate your Lhasa Kailash tour from a standard adventure to a truly luxurious experience, then you can also upgrade your accommodations in Kathmandu and Lhasa with a little extra investment.
Upgrading your accommodations in these cities will offer you exceptional comfort and acclimatization opportunities in absolute luxury amenities.
When you are in Kathmandu, you can choose to stay in a high-end four-or five-star hotel such as Dwarika, Soaltee, Marriott, etc. And for further comfort in Lhasa, you have options such as St. Regis Lhasa Resort, InterContinental Lhasa Paradise, Songtsam Lhasa Linka, etc.
توجه داشته باشید:
If you like, you can also elevate your stays in Shigatse and Saga to comfortable modern hotels.
When is the best time to engage in a Lhasa Kailash tour?
The absolute best time for our high-altitude Lhasa Kailash tour is from May to September. Between May and June, you will have pleasantly mild weather with crisp, clear skies and excellent visibility of snow-domed mountain peaks.
This is also the time to observe the famous Saga Dawa Festival in Lhasa and in Tarboche on the way to Kailash. Between July and August, the temperature in Tibet will be around 12 to 17 degrees Celsius, with monsoon clouds hovering above.
However, the Mount Kailash region is located in a rain shadow, and almost the entire Tibet remains dry with only occasional light rain in the evening. This will also be the most auspicious time when you will meet flocks of Hindu and Tibetan pilgrims on the road to Kailash, particularly on the Full Moon days.
Between September and October, it’s autumn in Tibet, which offers completely cloudless, bright blue skies. You can have the excellent Darshana of Mount Kailash during this time.
Difficulty Level of Lhasa Kailash Tour with Everest Base Camp
Our Lhasa Kailash tour with Everest Base Camp is regarded as an extreme/strenuous journey which is far from a standard sightseeing or trekking holiday.
In fact, our Lhasa Kailash tour stands out as one of the most physically demanding journeys that will test your limits, both physical and mental, to the extreme.
The challenge here is not only from trekking (three-day trek around Kailash) but also from the high altitude of Tibet, its dry air, changing weather, basic wilderness and staying conditions, and endurance.
To manage altitude sickness and timely acclimatization to the new altitude and environment, we have incorporated rest days in Lhasa with an exploration cultural tour in the city.
And at Everest Base Camp, we have included a night’s rest at Rongbuk Monastery. However, the conquering of Dolma La Pass (the highest altitude of the entire Lhasa Kailash tour) is inevitable.
On this day, you will be on your feet for 9 to 10 hours when you will have to climb over jagged rocks, followed by a steep descent. This day will require higher mental strength, a slow rhythmic pace, and, of course, endurance.
On the other hand, the lack of modern infrastructure in Western Tibet also adds a layer to the challenge of the Lhasa Kailash tour. Accommodations at Everest, Dirapuk, Zutulpuk, and Lake Mansarovar are incredibly rustic.
Likewise, the intense weather of Tibet is also another factor to be mindful of, which keeps changing, accompanied by fierce winds and freezing temperatures at night.
Who can participate in our Lhasa Kailash Tour 15 days journey?
Our Lhasa Kailash tour 15 days journey, is a bit demanding adventure and so it is not suitable for everyone. However, you do not need to be a professional trekker or athlete.
If you are a healthy and active person who likes adventure, possesses mental resilience, and can adapt to the high-altitude environment, then you can certainly become a part of our Lhasa Kailash tour.
If you are a non-trekker who thinks you cannot complete a three-day trek around Kailash, then there are certain options for you. You can stay back in Darchen while others go on Kailash parikrama, and you can hire a local horse/yak and a personal porter in Darchen before the trek starts.
As for the age requirement, adults, seniors, and children between 10 and 70 years old who have decent fitness and who can handle trekking and long drives are eligible to participate in our Lhasa Kailash tour.
However, if you have severe heart disease, unstable angina, chronic respiratory diseases, high blood pressure, or a history of severe altitude sickness, then our Lhasa Kailash tour itinerary will not be appropriate for you.
Training and Preparation for the successful completion of the Lhasa Kailash Tour Itinerary
For the successful completion of our Lhasa Kailash tour, you must begin your training program at least 8 to 12 weeks before your departure date.
Remember, this tour requires a higher degree of cardiovascular efficiency and lower-body endurance, and so your focus should be on improving these conditions.
The training programs that we recommend are:
- 45 to 60 minutes of steady cardio through long slow runs, swimming, walking, jogging, etc
- Stair climbing and inclined climbing that will help you tackle the ascent of the Dolma La Pass
- Do squats, lunges, and planks for building your lower body strength that will help in a long, strenuous descent from the Dolma La Pass
- Engage in a real hiking adventure carrying weight
- Practice deep breathing on your hikes
- Calm your mind through deep meditation
بیماری ارتفاع و سازگاری با محیط
Since our Lhasa Kailash tour will keep you above 4000 m for over a week and takes you to the highest point above 5500 m, the probability of altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS is 50 to 70 percent in this journey.
On the very second day, you will fly directly into Lhasa, which can cause mild altitude sickness immediately. That’s why we have strategically planned two days’ rest in Lhasa spent with exploratory tours in the city.
This planned rest will aid in your initial acclimatization before you reach Everest Base Camp. However, the prevalence of AMS is still high when you engage in Kailash parikrama for three days.
Therefore, if you have your doctor’s permission, you can take Diamox 24 hours before arriving in Lhasa. It will help your lungs breathe deeper and faster, thus helping in your rapid acclimatization.
If you suffer from persistent headache, nausea, and drowsiness, please tell our guide and do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude. Drink 4 liters of water each day and take mild painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
Our team is also equipped with bottled oxygen, and so our guide may administer it to you if needed.
اقامت، غذا و حمل و نقل
Himalayan Adventure Treks is your honorary partner for the Lhasa Kailash tour, which will look after all the logistics of the tour for your comfort.

However, once you are in the remote wilderness of کمپ اصلی اورست، Kailash, and Lake Mansarovar, you will stay in basic, unheated rustic guesthouses.
Rooms will be twin-share or dormitory-style with plywood beds and thick blankets. Toilets will be external, shared, with no hot running water.
For meals, we have taken care of your breakfast, which is included at your hotels in every overnight place.
Lunch, dinner, and drinks will be on your own, which you will eat in clean wayside restaurants on the road. General choices include fresh, steaming Sichuan-style stir-fries, Tibetan noodle soups (Thukpa), hearty vegetable momos, and traditional fried rice.
We have taken care of all your ground transportation needs utilizing private modern AC vehicles both in Kathmandu and Tibet. In Kathmandu, depending on the group, a car or jeep will be used, and in Tibet, a modern tourist coach will be used.
Kathmandu to Lhasa flight will also be arranged, and the cost is already integrated into the total price of our Lhasa Kailash tour package.
Independent Travel in Tibet
Please keep in mind that independent travel in Tibet is completely out of the question. National Tourism of Tibet has set regulations that do not allow any international travelers to travel solo in Tibet.
However, you can travel alone or single following the protocols listed below:
- You must book a pre-arranged private tour through a licensed travel agency like Himalayan Adventure.
- An agency will organize your Tibet Travel Permit, and only then can you board a flight to Lhasa
