Trip Introduction

If you want a theme of your travel to be adventure and discovery, then look no further, for our Paradise Bhutan trek is exactly what you are looking for.

After all, the Paradise Bhutan trek will take you to the wildest, remotest terrain of one of the secret countries of the world: Bhutan. From start to finish, you will have an extraordinary journey filled with adventure, the wildest nature, and authentic culture.

If you love being outdoors, don’t mind spending a few nights under the star-dusted sky, and wish to see the true Bhutan and its people in their relaxed and uncomplicated form with their local Buddhist tradition, then do not miss out on our 10 days Paradise Bhutan trek.

Our Paradise Bhutan trek is a circular circuit route that traces the ridge of the Dagala Mountain range, south of Thimphu, in central Bhutan. There are several small and large high mountain lakes between 4200 and 4400 m below this mountain range.

That’s why this adventure is also called the Dagala Thousand Lakes trek, or Bhutan Dagala Trek. Of course, there are not quite a thousand, but there can be up to 100, each one with its own stunning beauty.

Some of them that you will see on our Paradise Bhutan trek include Dagay Tsho, Bjay Tsho, Reli Tsho, Thro Tsho, Tsha Tsho, Hen Tsho, Ser Tsho, Jumo Latsho, Jage Tsho, and many others, where you can fish for golden trout with a special permit.

Additionally, you will see many yak herders’ camps with their yaks grazing on the mountain slopes, along with remarkable flora and fauna. You will also traverse several beautiful mountain passes in Bhutan, including Pagalaptsha Pass (4250 m), Labajong Pass (4500 m, the highest point), and Chole La Pass (4100 m), to name a few.

Each of these passes will offer you a splendid chance to see the stunning, jagged peaks of Jomolhari (7326 m), Mount Lhotse (8516 m), Tshering Gang, Khangbum (6500 m), Gangchen Ta (6784 m), Masang Gang (7194 m), Jichu Drake (6662 m), Tsende Gang (6481 m), and Mount Everest (8848 m), along with the magnificent Gangkhar Puensum (7570 m).

At both the start and conclusion of your Paradise Bhutan trek, you will also explore some of the most fascinating temples, dzongs, and villages in Paro and Thimphu, located in western Bhutan.

You will visit the renowned Tiger’s Nest Monastery and Kyichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Bhutan. Additionally, you will also create your own postal stamp at the National Post Office in Thimphu, visit the Taschicho Dzong, and much more.

Our Paradise Bhutan trek is a light to medium adventure in Bhutan that can be booked as a private or shared experience with flexible daily arrival and departure dates based on your preferences.

The best time to do the Paradise Bhutan trek is between September and October, and April and June.

Detail itinerary of Paradise Bhutan Trek – 10 days

01

Day 01: Arrive at Paro Airport, 2200 m

To begin your incredible Paradise Bhutan trek, today, you will take a spectacular flight that will bring you to Paro. Prepare to inhale the invigorating mountain air from the Himalayas of Jichu Drake, Jomolhari, and Tsrim Khang.

At the airport, you will find our friendly Bhutanese guide waiting to welcome you. After the formalities, you will take a short drive to your hotel.

If you happen to arrive early, we may visit one or two sights in Paro Valley. We may go to see the Rinpung Dzong, more popularly known as Paro Dzong.

A short drive and crossing an ancient bridge, we will be at the fortress of this dzong, where we can look above at the walls of the old Observation Tower, now hosting a museum.

Apart from the intricate wood carvings, this 17th-century historical structure is filled with religious murals. The old observation tower called the Ta Dzong sits high above this dzong, where we can explore the National Museum of Bhutan.

It has five floors that exhibit weapons, national attire, manuscripts, stuffed animals, postage stamps, silverware, and many delicate items.

We can also see the chapel built in the main hall that houses the four incarnated forms of Buddha.

After the first glimpse of the Bhutan culture, we will now head back to our hotel for an evening meal and sleep.

Day 02: Hike to Taktsang Monastery/Tiger’s Nest Monastery, 3,120 m, 5 to 6 hours

Today, we are in for a real treat on our Paradise Bhutan trek. We will be hiking to the most renowned pilgrimage destination of Bhutan, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

Its name comes from the legend that speaks about the visit of Guru Padmasambhava, the foremost tantric master of Tibetan Buddhism.

Legend says that he came flying across the sky on the back of a tigress in the 8th century, landing in the monastery location.

He fought demons and established Buddhism in Bhutan. This monastery is dramatically perched over a steep 1000 m cliff, so it will take around 2 to 3 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend.

You can also hire a horse to ascend and descend the route, but it may cost around 15 to 20 US Dollars per person (an extra price). After breakfast, we will drive to the parking area located at the base of the monastery.

We will then get ready to hike along a sometimes steep trail, which will lead us straight to the Taktsang Cafe. Watching the monastery from here, we will enjoy some hot coffee, after which we will now ascend the 700 stone steps.

Once we are inside the monastery, we can see the mythical tigress statue, the Hall of Thousand Buddhas, and several caves filled with sacred texts.

After finishing the tour, we may also go to see the rarely visited Zangdopelri Gompa, or we may also proceed to extend our Paro tour to Kyichu Lhakhang Temple.

It is the oldest sacred temple of Bhutan, built in the 7th century by the royal decree of the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. If we have enough time left, we may also venture to Drukgyel Dzong.

Built in 1649, this monument celebrates the success of Bhutan over Tibet. Later in the evening, why not take a hot stone bath at the local traditional farm of Paro?

Day 03: Drive from Paro to Genekha (2800 m), 1 hour

After resting in Paro, we are now all set to continue our Paradise Bhutan trek. Today, we will be driving to Genekha from where our real hiking expedition will begin amid the pristine terrain of Bhutan.

But first, we will drive from Paro along the vast Thimphu Highway for a while. The road will now bifurcate to a mountain dirt road that passes through two little, quaint towns of Bama and Chizhi.

A little further, we will see the signboard of the Genekha Primary School. This is the point where we will leave our vehicle and start to descend to the riverbank.

Clearing the ground, we will then establish our comfortable tents and explore the surroundings of Genekha, known for its exquisite metalwork. We will also meet our pack animals and our team here.

Day 04: Trek from Genekha to Gur (3350 m) 4-5 hours

Early in the morning, loading our animals with our luggage, we will set forth to reach the Thousand Lakes of Bhutan.

Gradually ascending through the oak forest, we will arrive at Tsochekha, one of the secluded rural Bhutan mountain villages.

We will now cross a new hanging bridge over the river and head west for a while. Then, the trail will bend south from where we will hike beside the eastern shore of the Genetsang Chu River towards the Dolung Chu tributary.

The upstream trail will now turn into a tight, narrow route where we can see the cultivation of the priceless mushroom main species, including chanterelles and matsutake.

And so, we will meet many mushroom pickers here as we keep climbing and reach a rocky plateau.

We will need to continue for two more hours until we reach the lush green platform of Gur, our next overnight tenting location.

Day 05: Trek from Gur to Labatama (4300 m) 6-7 hours

Today, our 10 days Paradise Bhutan trek will lead us to an altitude exceeding 4000 m amidst the secluded lakes of western Bhutan. After breakfast in our camp, we will hike through the dense moss-covered forest.

After a few moments, we will be slowly ascending the 4250 m high slope of the impressive Pagalaptsha Pass of Watasachen.

On the pass summit, we will see four stone stupas standing between the massive eternal frames of Jichu Drakey, Mount Everest, Mt. Tshering Gang, Mount Kanchenjunga, and Jomolhari.

Upon descending from the pass, we will pass by two stone houses, which are still used by yak herders. Now, our route will continue over a gentle saddle to the Labatama plateau.

Standing on this platform, we can look at the entire Dagala mountain range. For camping by the lake shore, we will take the upstream trail and camp beside Utsho Tsho Lake, known locally as Gewa Tsho.

Its elevation is 4300 m, offering a tranquil location for our camping night. We can also observe golden trout swimming gracefully in the waters.

Day 06: Explore Labatama

Since we are now over 4000 m, it makes sense that we stay an extra night to acclimatize to the height. Thus, we have an entire day at Labatama, which we will use to explore its phenomenal surroundings.

We will slowly hike up to some stunning nearby mountain lakes. Very close to our campsite, we can visit several lakes that led to the name Dagala Thousand Lakes trek.

There aren’t literally thousands of lakes, but there are certainly many between 4200 and 4400 m elevations.

Some of these lakes include Bjay Tsho, Jumo Latsho, Tsha Tsho, Dagay Tsho, Ser Tsho, Thro Tsho, Yue Tsho, Hen Tsho, Bay Tsho, Reli Tsho, and Jage Tsho.

In Bhutan, Tsho means pious lake, and all these lakes along the route are sacred due to their link with the Jomolhari deity named Aum Jomo. Near Bjay Tsho, we will also explore a meditation cave.

After a circular hike to the lakes, we may also explore the site of the Dophu Tshawa ruins, which is also called the Daga Penlop Auchu Tshering.

If you are properly acclimatized, then you may also choose to hike along a mountain ridge trail that will lead you to the summit of Mount Jomo (5050 m).

This peak is regarded as a peak of a female deity who is believed to safeguard the local wildlife. After seeing the region’s untamed terrain, we will head back to our camp for the night.

Day 07: Trek from Labatama to Panka (4000 m) 4-5 hours

Early in the morning, we will begin an exhilarating ascent along the western ridge (4355 m) high above the Dala Tsho Lake.

Then, our route will continue over the 4500 altitude of the Labajong Pass, which also stands as the highest point of our Paradise Bhutan trek.

For an additional exceptional view, we will ascend for around thirty more minutes and gain around 100 m.

The snowy knife-like edges of Gangkhar Puensum, Jichu Drake, Tshering Gang, Khangbum, Masang Gang, Tsende Gang, Gangchen Ta, Everest, Lhotshe, and Jomolhari steal our attention for a long time.

The route down the pass will take us through the nomadic site of Bhutan. Eventually, the trail of the Doccha Chhu River Valley will now guide us to our overnight camping site at Panka.

Day 08: Trek from Panka to Talakha, 3080 m, 4 hours, and drive to Thimphu, 2400 m, 1 hour

Today marks the final day of trekking in our Paradise Bhutan trek. The trail from Panka will turn north and run through the dense, rich forest for a while.

We will then be ascending the steep slope of the 4100 m tall Chole La Pass. The trail beyond the pass will then descend us to Kiwi Chowa Camp (4030 m) located on a hillside surrounded by stone houses of yak herders.

Next, we will again be climbing a small pass measuring 3960 m, where we can see several trails meeting one another. Our trail will walk us down along an ancient riverbed, covered in scree, until we reach yet another high-altitude trail.

From here, we will make yet another steep ascent over the Tale La Pass (4180 m), which offers clear views of Thimphu and Wandi Valley. The trail now passes through the wild route lined by blue poppies that takes us straight to Talakha Gomba at 3080 m.

After visiting the monastery, the route will now hike us down to Chamgang. Here, we will get in our vehicle and drive to Thimphu to enjoy a comfortable, warm bed after several days of camping.

Thimphu is one of the most exceptional and youthful capitals in the world, which is positioned right next to the Wang Chu River.

Today, we will see the most exquisite monuments of this city before driving to the starting location of our Paradise Bhutan trek.

First, we will see the Clocktower and also visit the archery stadium, which are very near our accommodation. Then, we will also get our personalized stamps at the Nepal Post Office.

We certainly cannot miss a tour of Tashichho Dzong, the central administrative seat of the Kingdom. We will also observe the 51.5 m tall Buddha Dordenma statue at Kuenselphodrang.

Next, we will go to the National Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 to pay respect to the work of the great third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorjee Wangchuk. The main highlight here is the image of the tantric deity, Samantabhadra Buddha.

After this tour, we will set off for a two-hour-long drive towards Paro. The route will be gracious as we travel past Chunzom, where we can see the delightful meeting of the Thimphu and Paro Rivers.

Here, for a little while, we can also admire Tibetan, Bhutanese, and Nepalese art in various chortens. Next, we will journey via Tachogang Monastery and Shaba Village before we arrive reach Paro again.

When to go for the Paradise Bhutan Trek?

For the Paradise Bhutan trek, the best time will occur in the spring and autumn. Spring (March-May) offers warmer nights, but the skies are often less clear.

Rain can occur from time to time, and so the days can sometimes be obscured by the clouds and fog. However, April will simply be enchanting when the entire forest trail of the Paradise Bhutan trek is adorned with the blossom of the blue poppies (national flower in Bhutan).

And, when you are in Paro and Thimphu, you will also be the prime witness of the Mask Dance festival of Tshechu.

In autumn months (September-November), temperatures are comfortably warm, similar to spring, and there will be no more clouds or fog to block the views of the high mountains.

During the summer months (June-August), rainfall will occur heavily, but the natural surroundings will be stunningly beautiful and green. However, the trail of the Paradise Bhutan trek can become slippery and muddy, increasing the risk of accidents.

Winter months (December-February) can be quite cool, with temperatures occasionally dropping below freezing, while daytime temperatures can reach a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius.

Also, the route will be extra secluded because of the abandonment of the local shelters by the local population of herders.

Difficulty Grade of 10 Days Bhutan Paradise Trek

Our Paradise Bhutan trek is a light to medium hiking adventure in the rural mountain setting of Bhutan. This trek will take you to an altitude between 2500 and 4500 m.

The majority of the trail runs through the dense forest while also following the mountain ridges and several high passes. Geographically, you will be mainly in the hinterland, far from common tourist areas; however, your walking route will be in good condition.

The daily stages on our 10 days Paradise Bhutan trek consist of walking between 4 and 6 hours, designed to allow you enough time to reach the next camp.

You will also have a rest day at Labatama, when you will take an optional hike towards the lake or the nearest peak. The elevation gains on this trek can be between 500 and 1000 meters per day.

Kindly know that our Dagala Thousand Lakes trek will take you deep into the heart of nature. So you must be ready for some dangers such as strong winds, sudden climate change, rockfalls, etc.

Additionally, understand that instead of comfort, adventure, experience, and nature will be the true priority of our Paradise Bhutan trek, and so five nights of this trek will occur in camping on the grounds.

You will have the full support of our English-speaking Bhutanese guide. You will also have a cook, one to three porters to carry your gear and take care of the animals, to establish and break down the tents, and offer you supplies.

Please also know that you cannot use the animals for riding, but they will transport you in case of any emergencies.

Who can join our Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek?

If you have good health and a commendable level of physical fitness, if you can easily manage an elevation gain of 500 to 1000 meters each day, and if you can hike for 4 to 6 hours per day, then you can join our Paradise Bhutan trek even if you are inexperienced in trekking adventures in Bhutan.

However, it is important for us to tell you about the presence of the risk of altitude sickness during the trek. You will also need to sleep in tents for five continuous nights.

We will be offering you all the equipment except for sleeping bags. Our team will look after the setup and takedown of the tents, and all meals will be prepared by our cook, who can prepare the dishes that suit your taste.

Please understand that physical exertion, unfamiliar cuisine, climate changes, and high altitudes can be some difficulties that you may face in the initial days of the trek.

Therefore, we suggest you consult your doctor and get a thorough examination to find out if this trek is suitable for you or not. If you have any heart or circulatory, joint, mobility, or respiratory conditions, we strongly advise you not to take part in our Dagala Thousand Lakes trek.

Preparation for Paradise Bhutan Trek

Please understand that trekking in Bhutan is not like trekking in Nepal or other parts of the world. The trails will be distant from civilization, so you will have to fully depend on your feet, health, and quick mind.

Therefore, we advise you to undertake preparation and training one to three months in advance of our Paradise Bhutan trek, whether you are newcomers or experienced backpackers. We suggest you do:

  • Cardio and Endurance exercise: walking, running, swimming, or cycling for 30-45 minutes, 3-4 times weekly
  • Strength (Legs and Core) exercise: squats, lunges, step-ups, and planks
  • Simulation: Hike on terrain that mimics Bhutanese landscapes with a light backpack
  • Flexibility: stretch your calves, quadriceps, and hips
  • Mental: prepare for sudden changes in weather, less comfort, and physical challenges
  • Through medical check: go through a medical checkup and consult whether you can take altitude medicine like Diamox
  • On the trek: gradually trek and respect the acclimating days and hikes
  • Maintain hydration
  • Eat a carbohydrate-rich diet
  • Prepare yourself with layered attire
  • Get well, broken hiking boots
  • Before the actual trek, if possible, go on a real hiking adventure in your homeland

Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS/Altitude Sickness

You need to be aware of the possible risk of AMS in our Paradise Bhutan trek. Our travel program for 10 days Paradise Bhutan trek is designed to encourage smooth and effective acclimatization.

Still, the responses to the high elevation differ individually. However, we haven’t encountered any serious issues except for minor discomforts. Remember, you will be at altitudes between 2500 and 4500 meters during this trek, with five days spent above 3000 meters.

The altitude may not seem very extreme, but it is possible that you experience minor symptoms of AMS, such as fatigue, headaches, slight dizziness, and insomnia.

For this reason, we always advise our clients to maintain a steady pace, slow their progress, avoid overexertion, and ensure they take sufficient rest at the camps. It is also important to drink plenty of water with electrolytes added.

All these precautions will help prevent and relieve the symptoms of AMS. It will also be appropriate to take Diamox if your doctor has approved to do so.

Accommodation and Meals

During our Dagala Thousand Lakes trek, we have carefully selected for you a three-star mid-range hotel in Paro and Thimphu. You will have a double bedroom with modern amenities of a hot and cold bath, WiFi, an electric outlet, and an in-room shower.

When trekking, our support team will establish a mess tent, a two-person sleeping tent, a dining tent, a kitchen tent, and separate toilet tents for ladies and gentlemen.

You will receive a ground and foam mattress, chairs, tables, and cooking utensils. Additionally, we will supply a Petromax lantern for lighting. This way, you will have the adventure with comfort, truly creating a paradise for you in nature.

As for meals, you will receive full board for the entire time of the Paradise Bhutan trek, as is customary in Bhutan, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You will get hot beverages of hot tea, coffee, milk, chocolate, or juice. However, the beverage cost during the hotel stay and on the trek is not part of our included service during 10 days Paradise Bhutan trek.

Utilizing only private vehicles for all transport inside Bhutan is customary. During our Paradise Bhutan trek, we will offer you private transportation service for your airport transfers, guided tours in Paro and Thimphu, and transfer from Paro to Genekha and from Talakha to Thimphu.

On the trek, pack animals will carry your gear, but they will not be used for your transportation during the trek. Please keep in mind that the airfare for arrival and departure from Paro will be at your own cost.

Money Matters

During our Paradise Bhutan trek, you will have an initial time in Paro, where you will find ATM booths and a money exchange counter too. However, we suggest you convert your national currency into local (Bhutanese Ngultrum) at Paro Airport, where you will get the best rates.

Elsewhere, you may not get the favorable rates with a high service fee. Keep your exchange invoice safe, as it will be necessary if you wish to convert any remaining Bhutanese currency back at the airport.

During the Paradise Bhutan trek, carry enough local cash as the people may not accept foreign currencies, which are acceptable in larger cities of Bhutan, such as Indian Rupees, Euros, or US Dollars.

You can also select to get cash from ATM booths in Paro if the high service charge is not a problem for you.

Mobile and Internet

Indian mobile carriers like Airtel and Vodafone offer roaming service inside Bhutan, which is quite pricey. Therefore, if you want the best deal and reliability, then buy a local Bhutanese SIM, such as Bhutan Telecom/B-Mobile or TashiCell, at the Paro airport.

They provide a 5G network for around 200 Ngultrum. For the trail of our Paradise Bhutan trek, we advise you to get the B-Mobile as its coverage is quite reliable in the remote villages of Bhutan.

You may need to cut the standard-sized SIM Card of Bhutan, as finding a nano or micro SIM Card in Bhutan will be quite problematic. You can also buy an eSIM online, which you can activate in Paro.

Regarding WiFi, you will have basic free WiFi in Paro and Thimphu, but not while camping. Also, mobile internet may not always be available.

How to enter Bhutan for the Paradise Bhutan Trek?

If you wish to avoid flights and enter Bhutan via the overland route, then you can cross through the town of Phuentsholing via West Bengal, India, which is 176 km south of Thimphu.

Another option is the border crossing at Samdrup Jongkhar in eastern Bhutan, right on the Assam border, just 110 km (about a 3-hour drive) from Guwahati Airport in India.

There is also the Gelephu border crossing that links Assam with the south-central region of Bhutan. The journey from Gelephu to Thimphu is roughly 250 km and takes around 9-10 hours.

However, the simplest and most favored route to enter Bhutan is by flying to Paro Airport, which is serviced by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. You can catch a daily flight from these cities:

  • India: Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Bodh Gaya, Guwahati, and Mumbai
  • Nepal: Kathmandu
  • Thailand: Bangkok
  • Singapore: Changi
  • Bangladesh: Dhaka

Travel Insurance

Our Paradise Bhutan trek will occur deep in the nature of Bhutan, where it is difficult to access roads or civilization. Additionally, being a high altitude mountain area, there will be an accompanying risk of sudden weather change, rockfall, falls, injuries, accidents, and AMS.

In the remote trekking trails of Bhutan, medical facilities are often scarce, requiring a call for the rescue helicopter for immediate transfer. The rescue cost by the helicopter is very high in Bhutan, and you will have to cover its cost yourself.

So we highly encourage you to get a thorough private travel health insurance plan that includes medical repatriation, hospitalization, and mountain and helicopter rescue up to 4500 m for our Paradise Bhutan trek. Don’t forget to get all the necessary contact details and procedures from your insurance company.
